Fr.
Paul Walsh, C.S.B., Pastor
Paul Francis Walsh was born in Hamilton, Ontario. He was baptized at
St. Patrick’s Church in Hamilton. 10 months later Paul and his
parents moved to Grimsby, Ontario. He was the first of seven
children to be born to Bob and Adele (5 girls and 2 boys). He went
to grade school at St. Joseph’s in Grimsby and to high school at Denis
Morris in St. Catharine’s. He graduated from the St. Michael’s
College at the University of Toronto in June 1978.
Father Paul joined the Basilians as an associate in
1979, was first professed on August 16, 1981 and was ordained on April 25th,
1987 at the church where he received his first communion and was
confirmed - St. Joseph’s in Grimsby. Over the years, Father Paul has
lived in many different communities: Merrillville Indiana, Detroit
Michigan, Toronto Ontario, Edmonton Alberta, Las Cruces New Mexico,
Lethbridge Alberta, Washington D.C., East Rochester New York, Owen Sound
Ontario, and of course now at Windsor Ontario.
Earlier in his priesthood Father Paul thought he might
teach in a university setting, and so he spent six years studying at the
Catholic University of America (that was in addition to his studies for
priesthood at the Toronto School of Theology in Toronto). He
discovered, however, in the midst of his studies that he deeply loved
parish work. So, coming to Assumption has felt a bit like bringing
his two interests together: being pastor in a university community.
Father Paul also served as associate pastor of
Assumption Church in Fairport New York from 1996 to 1999. He was
also one year (1999-2000) as associate pastor at St. Mary’s and the
Missions in Owen Sound serving churches in Sauble Beach (Holy Family),
Hepworth (St. Mary’s) and Wiarton (St. Thomas Aquinas). He then
became pastor at St. Mary’s and the Missions (also dedicated to the
Assumption) from 2000 to 2005 before coming here to be pastor of
Assumption Church.
